I’ve seen some amazing closets in my experience organizing and styling! I’ve also seen some disasters! Once your wardrobe is revamped and you clean out your closet you can begin to create a thoughtful space. Here are some tips and tricks you never would have thought of.
The closet you purchased is not permanent!
That wire self has got to go! Redoing your closet system is EASY and AFFORDABLE! There’s plenty of affordable closet systems from Home Depot, Ikea, The Container Store, etc. You can even reuse the wire shelving and rearrange and add more shelves. I truly believe that builder grade shelving is the worst waste of space in your home. Simple login to Ikea.com, upload your dimensions and customize your closet shelving! My entire closet and laundry room system was around $300! I hired a handyman to install when I was a work and presto. see below If budget allows visit a local closet specialist like California Closets, they custom design built-in closet systems and take care of the entire project!
Organize by Frequently Used
Choose a linnen closet, laundry room, garage, etc for a “least frequently used items” space. Your personal closet is used on a daily basis and should not house rarely used items like air mattresses, camping equipment, or golf clubs. I personally use my guest bedroom closet for rarely used items like extra comforters, spare hangers, wrapping paper, stored documents, and a Christmas Tree. Moving rarely used items out of a high traffic area leaves room for a decluttered organized oasis.
Planning Your Layout
Planning is key when reorganizing or remodeling your closet. Take inventory of what’s already hanging up. Do you have a large number of long garments like dresses or dusters? Make sure you have a space that can fit these long items. Do you have a ton of sweaters? Plan enough drawer space (DO NOT HANG YOUR SWEATERS AHHH!)
Take everything out of your closet and organize by category – shirts, pants, sweaters, etc. Make sure you have enough width for each section when planning your new layout!
Yes, friend! Even your closet needs accessories! Consider the following items after organizing.
-Small Trash Can
-A space for pill shavers, lint rollers, garment tape, etc.
-An area rug- A rug can make your closet feel much less like a utilitarian room
-A small bench
-A step stool or ladder
-Matching hangers make space look so much put together
These are just a few things to think about when planning your closet system or layouts. Stay tuned I can’t wait to share details on organizing each section of your closet next time!
